poem in your pocket day:  April 28, 2022

The entire OMS population celebrated Poem In Your Pocket Day sponsored by the LMC on Thursday, April 28.  Every student carried several copies of a favorite poem written by either a published poet or the student himself/herself.  During designated trading times during the day, announcements were made to encourage students to share their poems.  Grade level classes took the opportunity to meet with other classes to exchange and share their poems. Look below to see photos of the students trading poems.

To start the day, students attended an assembly given by local poet, Isaac Ginsberg Miller from the Chicago Poetry Center. Mr. Ginsberg shared poems by well-known poets such as Maya Angelou, Naomi Shihab Nye, Jacqueline Woodson, and Shel Silverstein. He invited students to participate in writing a group poem. Various students contributed ideas for lines. When the process was complete, a whole new poem took shape!
